Summer Time Survival Guide: The Life Of A Stay Home Mom
Summer is officially in full swing!
I know this sounds so exciting and remembering when I was young summer was always full of activities. So many things to do such as riding bikes, playing outside, playing with friends, riding to the corner store for treats. Some of my favourite memories are from summer break. This being said I remember all of these awesome times when I was a bit older. When I could ride my bike to the store with friends and I didn’t have to be supervised at all times. This really got me thinking….what are some fun things to do with my girls who are not quite old enough to run and play on their own. As I got to thinking I thought to myself I bet I am not alone in thinking this way. So I decided to write a blog on some summer time activities that the whole family can enjoy. So keep reading and maybe it will give you some more ideas to fill up those days.
1) Spray Park Fun:
OK I am just going to say it… I seriously love spray parks. These to me are genius. Not only are they totally safe to kiddos but they are fun, filled with kids all ages and help keep your little ones keep cool. I feel so lucky to live in a city that has 3 spray parks and I understand that a lot of cities are not quite there yet but they will. It keeps my children busy, they meet new friends, and a great social gathering place for moms and dads too. Therefore spray parks top my list at number 1!!!
2) A Good Old Fashioned Picnic!
I know this may sound old school but I still love a good ol picnic. So easy to throw together some sandwiches, snacks, maybe a ball to kick around and hit the road. The nice thing about picnics is you can have them anywhere. My favourite places include the beach, a park or even just an open field. Anywhere that has space for those kiddos to run, get some fresh air and expel some of that energy. I would say every weekend we are home in the summer includes a picnic. Even if we are in our backyard!
3) Park Hopping!
I would say that every city or town usually have a few different parks. I feel lucky to say in Nanaimo, where we live, there are so many amazing parks. Some we have never even been too. Some that we might have to drive to and at least 3 or 4 are within walking distance. As I know most moms parks are their go to in the summer I like to go park hopping. And why not? Pack a lunch, try out as many parks as you can in one day. Some your kids might not like and some they might want to stay longer. Park hopping is a fun way to fill a day and get your kids out in the fresh air.
4) When Life Gives you Lemons You make Lemonade!
I must admit I have not done this yet with my girls and I am so excited to this summer. How cute is it when you drive past a lemonade stand and those adorable kiddos are jumping and waving to come visit them. In my opinion, it’s a great way for children to learn the value of money. There is nothing more rewarding than watching your child save their pennies for something they want. And not to forget the sweet treat of a glass of lemonade on a hot day is hard to resist.
5) Parks and Rec Activities!
I know I have said it a few times but I love Nanaimo. Nanaimo is great for providing kids events during any school breaks. Take advantage of these. Whether it’s a puppet show at the library, activities at a park, even a free movie. You can usually find a list of available activities on your cities parks and recreation webpage. Most of these are free and some are a couple of dollars. It’s a great way for your children to be around other kids their own age and also make some new friends. Some that even might end up at the same school. So make sure to check out your cities activity guides and get some good ideas to keep those kiddos busy.
In Conclusion
Because I am a working mom to me it is important to have my children busy and involved in different activities. Especially taking time to unplug and get them out of the house. I’m sure there will be days that I might need to turn on a show for them. And there might be days that we don’t go out in the sun. And that’s fine too. But I also want to make sure they enjoy their summer and I try to fill up these days as much as I can to make it a summer they remember.
